It is almost time to dust off the easels and browsers and draw a display plan because in less than 3 weeks Elaine and I will be at our first event of the year, a 4 day special at RHS Hyde Hall run by the ever brilliant Essex Craft & Design Show. Bigger than ever, I believe we will be in marquees in the lower part of the gardens. We always look forward to returning to Hyde Hall, it is one of the nicest places to spend 4 days and we look forward to seeing familiar faces and some new ones.
Earlier this year I wrote about keeping things local and I have been true to my word, shooting in Essex, not to mention at the bottom of our garden in my little studio. Always looking to increase the breadth of my portfolio I have spent some time using off-camera flash to create some attractive flower images. Flora is my latest gallery where many more images can be viewed.
Here are a couple of examples. All are editions which will be limited to a maximum of 25. I hope to have a couple on sale at Hyde Hall.
Locally means Southend and Mersea as well as London. Although the landscape down here is not, how shall I put it, very dynamic, it does afford plenty of creative opportunity and I trust I have put my vision to good use. I do enjoy experimenting with long exposures, these images offer a view which is never seen but captures movement over a period of seconds and or minutes. The outcomes are usually highly satisfying for a landscape photographer but I know are not to the taste of everyone although I suppose that could be extended to any image of any subject. I do hope that my images convey emotion and a connection to the viewer. Sometimes an image - form, colour, atmosphere - just resonates. This is my objective in what I do.
It looks like the Bluebell season is early this year and I have already sold a 3 x 2 foot framed print 'Forest Floor'. I must say there is nothing better for a photographer than to see ones work printed, especially so large.
Returning to my opening comments about show time my events are greatly reduced this year; after Hyde Hall I have only one more before returning to Spitalfields in October. That is the Blackwater Country Show on 19th July. I am delighted to be judging a photographic competition during the summer but for obvious reasons I will not divulge which one! It will be very interesting for me to be on the other side of the fence. I think it will be a thankless task as we all tend to believe our picture is the best!
Only a few days before I set off on my spring grand tour, hectic, tiring but hopefully fruitful.
Look forward to seeing you perhaps at Hyde Hall, 29th April - 2nd May.
That is it until the next time. Thank you for reading.
